World Cup Picks: Round of 16

We are now under 10 days from the opening match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and to say that I am psyched would be an understatement. I feel like I just watched Iniesta’s goal to win the final vs The Netherlands back in 2010 let alone the Germany vs Argentina final in 2014! Side note- I still can’t believe the Dutch and the Italians are not in this tournament.

As a big football head, I have been completing my own brackets using a number of sites. Over the course of the next few days, I’ll be posting pics of my brackets, starting with the Round of 16 matches and winners. These pics are from the FotMob mobile app. Website link: https://www.fotmob.com/. It is definitely the best app I’ve come across for anything world football-related and I highly recommend checking it out. Please ignore my notoriously low battery.

Round of 16 Matches and Predictions (W indicates Winner)

France vs Croatia (W)

-As much talent as France has, I’m still not convinced. I think Croatia has one of the best midfields we will see in this tournament, and their attack should also not be overlooked.

Uruguay (W) vs Portugal

-Sorry, Cristiano. Uruguay has a solid squad- a nice blend of young talent and super veterans across the board.

Spain (W) vs Egypt

-La Furia Roja will have too much firepower for Egypt. They are definitely in the running to win the tourney.

Argentina (W) vs Australia

-I can’t see Australia raising any real threat over the 90-minutes. I expect Argentina to have the Socceroos on the back-foot for most of the match.

Brazil (W) vs Mexico

-Mexico’s pace, style and passion are always fun to watch for me. I think the tempo of this match will be furious at times, but eventually Brazil’s composure on the ball will prove too much for Mexico and they will slice them apart.

England (W) vs Colombia

-I am an EPL fan, so maybe I’m a bit biased here. But I haven’t been this confident in England’s national side since the Golden era. They are young, talented, and definitely seem to mesh, even in the midst of their fierce English club rivalries.

Germany (W) vs Serbia

-Germany is just stacked, as usual. The luxury of leaving Leroy Sané off the roster speaks volumes (still trying to wrap my head around that one). Serbia will unfortunately meet their demise in the Round of 16. Luck of the draw, I suppose.

Poland (W) vs Belgium

-I think this is a thrilling Round of 16 tie. As good as Belgium is on paper, I think Lewandowski is more clinical than Belgium’s strikers, and he’ll prove a difference maker in this one.

Quarterfinal round predictions are coming soon! Have a good start to the week, everyone!
